Rangers Didn't Quite Cookham.

Peter Mulvaney22 Apr 2024 - 06:30

Player of the match: Harvey

An issue with our ref meant the scheduled rematch against Cookham Dean had to be reversed back to thier ground but we weren't complaining, the surface being more conducive to football.
Rangers picked up where they left off last Wednesday and started strongly with an early cross from the right, though the shot from Connor was straight into the keeper's hands. Rangers were nearly sucker punched against the run of play when Cookham drove down the right, finding Vinny too far forward, the centre forward had broke free of the defence and took his chance, sliding the ball through Charlie's legs, however thankfully for Rangers the flag had gone up and the goal was disallowed.
Rangers had another chance when an excellent cross field pass from Ben
switched the play from right to left to find Connor, it looked like he may try and take early, though he opted to control and the covering defender stifled the shot.
Rangers best chance of the half came when a lofted ball was drove forward by Harvey, dominant in the air all game, toward Steph. The first defender missed timed his challenge which allowed Steph to control and turn the defender inside out, with only the keeper to beat the resulting shot rocketed off the outside of the left hand corner stansion, an awkward bobble just before the strike was apparent though a subtler finish may have been the better option
Another decent chance went begging when an excellent lofted free kick by Vinny found Harvey with pin point accuracy and he directed it across the face of goal. The keeper tried to claim but spilled it, though no one was on hand to provide the finish and the half ended scoreless.
The half time team talk was straightforward, despite the scare with the offside goal, we were playing some of the most positive possession football we have all season and the teamwork and graft from all was excellent, so much more of the same was the called for.

The second half saw Cookham come out with renewed resilience though Rangers had the first half chance, winning a free kick on the edge of the box which Jacob lined up and though he struck it well, it cleared the cross bar.
Cookham were now beginning to get the upper hand and with some excellent play the striker found himself on the right hand byline and managed to get the better of Ryan, and from a tight angle shot across the face of goal which rebounded off the left Post and came back square across the face of goal for Charlie to launch clear. Another gifted chance for Cookham came shortly after on a counter, which saw the lively striker beat the back line to put himself into a one on one situation, though he was a long way out, Charlie stood his ground and he snatched at his chance and scuffed the ball seeing it lamely wide of the left hand post.
The last chance of the game fell to Rangers with some excellent interplay between Will and Steph, before Will put Steph through hassled by a defender trying to hustle him off the ball. Steph kept his balance and unleashed a ferocious effort which rocketed off the crossbar and out to deny Rangers the spoils.
All in all, probably a fair result though this was another good performance by Rangers, the excellent teamwork again carried on from the first leg. Gaining four points from the second place team over back to back games is a decent return and we'll now look forward to the return game against Binfield Predators on Wednesday.
