As the sun shone down on Lowther Road the Sumas looked to win their second game in a row after a strong victory over London Lions last Saturday. The visitors were 8th placed North Greenford United who also came in search of an away victory.
The Sumas started brightly with several attacking chances, and it only took three minutes before Joao Jardim scored to give them the lead with a half volley from close range, which bounced into the bottom corner.
Minutes later Duval found himself inside the box with his sights on goal, however his curling shot went just over the bar and out for a goal kick.
As the game started to settle North Greenford had a few chances of their own with both a free-kick and close range shot rebounding off of the post to keep the score at 1-0.
In the 18th minute, Jake Woods led a counterattack and brilliantly fed through Sam Mead who ran across the backline to beat the defenders and slotted it past the keeper to double the Sumas lead.
In the 25th minute, North Greenford had a promising chance after a good build-up however the close-range opportunity was blasted over the bar and into the bushes at the back of the car park.
As both sides returned to the field after the half-time break the Sumas looked determined to hold onto their lead and secure the three points, and they looked like adding to their lead in the 46th minute as O’Connor had a chance on the edge of the box, however it was fired over.
As the 70th minute approached Jardim and Mead kept up the intensity and pressed the visitors’ defenders forcing them to make an error and in the end the Sumas managed to win a corner.
Soon after, Woods led an attack down the right wing and whipped in a low-driven cross in front of goal however no-one could connect with it as the ball spilled out at the other end of the box.
In the 75th minute, North Greenford looked like they were about to grab a goal back as they entered the box however expert defending from Wright and Green saw their sliding tackles block the shots and keep the score line as it was.
After several substitutes from both sides, additional time began and saw North Greenford’s No.10 sinbinned for sarcastically clapping at the referee after a decision was awarded to the Sumas.
The final whistle eventually blew out around Lowther Road and the Sumas jubilantly clapped the supporters who had turned out in the lovely weather to support the players since the first minute. Our next fixture sees the Sumas travel to face Spelthorne Sports on Saturday 15th April.
