The spring weather appeared once again as the Sumas travelled to face Spelthorne Sports as the run-in to the end of the season intensifies. The hosts sat 13th in the league, whilst Matt Cronan’s Sumas looked to pick up their third win in a row.
Jake Woods kicked off for the Sumas as the first half got underway. There were some early chances for the Sumas with Duval getting the ball on the edge of the box but it curled just wide of the target and out for a goal kick.
In the 17th minute Sam Mead collected the ball by the touchline, just inside the box and fired a shot across the face of goal, however it didn’t have enough on it to curl in and eventually went wide at the back post.
Minutes later, a similar chance fell for the Sumas with Woods firing a bouncing ball from a tight angle goalward, however the offside flag was raised, with the assumption being that Sam Mead was offside at the back post, however the reasoning wasn’t very clear.
Jardim then later had a chance of his own for the Sumas as he fired a shot from the left-side of the box, but the keeper was ready and saved the shot well.
Just before half time the hosts had a promising attack of their own however when the time came to get a shot away it was fired well wide of the target, with both sides going in at half-time with the score at 0-0.
As the second half got underway, the Sumas had a penalty appeal denied after Haworth appeared to be clipped and taken down in the box however the referee saw differently and gave Spelthorne a free kick, claiming Haworth dived.
In an attacking play for the Sumas, Duval broke through and had his shot saved by the keeper, with the ball ricocheting out towards Badshah whose shot went wide.
Only 2 minutes later, Duval was on the attack again down the left-hand side. He whipped in a low cross which was met by Jardim who connected with it well, with the shot flying just over the bar.
In the 75th minute, Cronan decided to make a change for the Sumas with Kai Francis replacing Dom Duval in attack, with the attacker having given his all from the first minute.
As the final whistle drew nearer and the score remaining level, the Sumas pushed on once again, with O’Connor receiving the ball to his feet in the box. He pulled off an impressive turn on the defender and jabbed the ball goalward and finding the back of the net to give the Sumas a 1-0 lead.
There was jubilation from the Sumas players, staff and travelling fans as the referee blew the whistle, giving the Sumas their third win in a row and to put them in an even better position going into a busy week of fixtures, with Chalfont, Broadfields and Virginia Water all travelling to Lowther Road this week.
